Man sentenced to 35 years for fatal shooting in Independence
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — An Oak Grove man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for a shooting that killed a woman and injured a man in Independence in 2018.
David Harris, 21, was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years for second-degree murder and armed criminal action and 10 years for assault and armed criminal action. The sentences will run consecutively, Jackson County prosecutors said.
Harris was convicted in July of killing Mary Schmitz, 20, and injuring a man at an apartment in Independence on Sept. 18, 2018.
Harris told police he fought with the injured man and shot Schmitz during the fight, according to court records.
