Cops fatally shoot driver after pursuit ends in fiery crash

January 6, 2021 GMT

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) — A man died after he was shot by police following a vehicle pursuit that ended when the car he was driving caught fire, authorities said.

The chase in East Cleveland began around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, when an officer spotted a car that apparently had been stolen. The pursuit soon ensued and continued until the car struck several undisclosed objects and caught fire, police said. Two men and a woman then jumped out of the car.

One man and the woman ran off in one direction while the driver — Vincent Belmonte, 19 — ran behind some nearby houses and jumped over a fence and entered the property of a school, police said. Officers who were chasing Belmonte said they fired several shots at him after he pulled out a gun, authorities said.

Officials have not said whether Belmonte shot at the officers, how many shots were fire overall by police or how many time Belmonte was shot. He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery, but was pronounced dead later Tuesday.

No officers were injured in the incident.
