Phoenix police: Officers shoot man simulating handgun
PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix police officers fatally shot a man during an encounter after he said he was armed and then quickly pulled his hand from behind his back while he simulated holding a gun, the Police Department said Tuesday.
A department statement said the shooting occurred Monday night after officers responded to a 911 call about the caller’s ex-boyfriend being in the patio of the caller’s apartment.
Police found the man elsewhere in the area and approached him while ordering him to remove his hand from his rear waistband, but he said he was armed, spoke about somebody getting shot and then simulated having a handgun, the statement said.,
“Officers reacted to the threat and fired their service weapons at the suspect, striking him,” the statement said.
The man’s identity was not released immediately.
No gun was found at the scene, the statement said.
