La Marque officials identify officer who fatally shot man
LA MARQUE, Texas (AP) — Officials in La Marque have identified an officer who fatally shot a Black man as six-year veteran of the city’s police department.
Officer Jose Santos fatally shot Joshua Feast, 22, of La Marque late Wednesday, according to a statement posted on the city’s website.
Santos, who is described as Hispanic, has worked for the La Marque Police Department since 2014 and is now on paid leave.
Police Chief Kirk Jackson has declined to say what led to the shooting, but said Feast was a person of interest in several recent shooting incidents in the city on the southern edge of Houston and that weapons were found at the scene of the fatal shooting.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has been hired to represent Feast’s family.
“We demand that the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into exactly why this tragedy occurred and to immediately release the body camera footage that is being withheld,” Crump said in a statement.
The body camera video is part of an investigation into the shooting by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and will not be immediately released, Jackson said.
Jackson said Santos is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
