2 wounded in confrontation with LA County sheriff’s deputies
WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) — Two people were shot and wounded when the sedan they were in drove in reverse toward Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who were seeking an auto theft suspect, authorities said.
One deputy was struck by the car and was treated at a hospital and released, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon when the deputies approached the sedan parked in the driveway of a home in unincorporated Whittier.
The department said a deputy-involved shooting occurred when the car reversed toward the deputies. The sedan continued on and rammed a patrol vehicle, then fled but crashed into a wall.
A woman in the vehicle was detained and two male occupants who fled on foot were detained nearby.
The driver, 20-year-old Adrian Romero, was hospitalized for gunshot wounds to the leg and was in stable condition, the department said. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and will be booked after he is released from the hospital.
The other occupant — the driver’s brother — 21-year-old Aldo Romero, was discovered in a backyard nearby by residents, authorities said. Deputies allegedly found a loaded semiautomatic handgun in his waistband. He was arrested on a vehicle theft warrant and additionally booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
It was not immediately clear whether the Romero brothers had attorneys who could speak on their behalf.
The woman was treated for gunshot wounds and released. She was a passenger in the vehicle and was not arrested.
