LOCAL BRIEFS: MU softball cancels road doubleheader, adds DH with Arkansas-Pine Bluff
The Missouri softball team announced it will play a nonconference doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at Mizzou Softball Stadium, according to an announcement by interim coach Gina Fogue on Thursday.
In a corresponding scheduling move, the team also announced it has canceled its originally scheduled doubleheader at Wichita State on Wednesday in order to comply with NCAA rules.
The Tigers were allowed one more additional regular-season game after their series finale against No. 12 Auburn was canceled due to inclement weather.
Missouri had agreed to play a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday and planned to play one game instead of two with Wichita State. Fogue and Shockers coach Kristi Bredbenner mutually agreed to cancel the scheduled games altogether.
The decision comes at an unusual time, however, given Missouri’s current precarious position in the midst of a consequential stretch run.
Wichita State (27-17, 9-6 American Athletic Conference) is one of the premier mid-major teams in the country. The Shockers boast wins over No. 16 Arkansas and No. 25 Oklahoma State.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (15-25, 10-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference), meanwhile, has not defeated a Division I team outside its own league. By comparison, Wichita State ranks 28th in RPI while the Golden Lions check in at 264th.
Missouri currently sits at 26-24 with five games remaining, meaning the team will need to win at least two to stay above .500 and stay eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers’ hunt for the postseason continues against Arkansas-Pine Bluff with the first pitch set for noon Saturday. The second game will follow 40 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
Live broadcast coverage of both games will be available on SEC Network+ via the WatchESPN app.
