Katy ISD earns 10 TISCA all-state spots

April 30, 2017 GMT

Katy ISD swimmers and divers combined for another strong season that ended with several state medals. The district also earned several spots on the Class 6A TISCA all-state team, based on the top times recorded throughout the high school season.

KISD produced 10 first-team times, ranking in the top eight in an event, including the No. 1 spot in the 100-yard backstroke by Cinco Ranch’s Glen Cowand. His time of 47.49 seconds won the state championship. He added first-team all-state times in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.

Aria Bernal had three all-state times for the Lady Cougars, including a 53.57 in the backstroke for the second-best time all season. She also made the first team in the 200-yard individual medley.

Taylor’s Jacob Schababerle produced a pair of all-state times, notably ranking No. 2 in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.04. Katy’s Kaloyan Bratanov finished with three all-state times, including a first-team spot with a 44.90 in the 100 free.

Cinco Ranch claimed two first-team relays. The Lady Cougars’ 200-yard medley relay ranked third overall at 1:44.91, while the Cougars’ 400 free relay was fourth in 3:04.97.

All-state honors were awarded in Class 6A, Class 5A and a private school division, the last of which compares times from all TAPPS classes as well as the SPC. The Katy area produced two first-team private school times as St. John XXIII’s Ben Rehfeld made the cut in the 200-yard freestyle and helped the Lions’ 400-yard freestyle relay make the top group.

Multiple-event all-state selections included Cinco Ranch’s Sophia Bernal and Christian Rossi, Morton Ranch’s Charles Bennett, Seven Lakes’ Michael Rudd, Taylor’s Emma Sticklen and St. John XXIII’s Canyon Neundorfer.

Lamar Consolidated ISD led the Fort Bend area in TISCA all-state selections this year, highlighted by a No. 2 overall time of 4:48.70 in the 500-yard freestyle by Peyton Quattlebaum. The George Ranch senior barely missed the first team in the 200 free, ranking ninth.

Foster’s William Roberson clocked the seventh-best time in Class 5A in the 50 free, adding second-team marks in the 100 free and backstroke. The Falcons also gained first-team spots in both boys freestyle relays.

Fort Bend ISD was led by Kempner’s Brittany Bui, who made the 6A second-team cut in both the butterfly and individual medley. Second-team selections from FBISD included Ridge Point’s Bobbi Kennett (100 breast), Clements’ Grace Wey (200 IM) and the Rangers’ 200 free relay.
