Big day for three New Milford ballplayers
Less than nine months ago, they helped lead the New Milford High School baseball team to the Class LL state semifinals, where they very nearly halted perennial powerhouse Amity’s run to its fourth consecutive state title.
And on Sunday, although they’re playing for different colleges now, three players from that New Milford team reached the same career milestone on the same day, as University of Hartford shortstop Jackson Olson, Wentworth Institute of Technology outfielder Owen Swanson, and Mercy College second baseman Tim Gesualdi each delivered his first collegiate hit.
Swanson smacked an RBI single in the seventh inning of a tie game as Wentworth walked off with a 2-1 win over New England College in the second game of a doubleheader in Auburndale, Fla. In Sunday’s doubleheader sweep, Swanson went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, and was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for his efforts. He has played in all seven games for the Leopards and is batting .357 (5-for-14) with a double, two runs batted in and a walk.
Olson laced a double in Hartford’s 9-5 loss to Bucknell in Davidson, N.C. He has started two games for the Hawks and is batting .333 (2-for-6).
Gesualdi had an RBI single in Mercy’s 13-4 loss to American International College in the second game of its home-opening doubleheader Sunday in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., after returning from a five-gave road trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Gesualdi has played in five games for the Mavericks, including one start, and is batting .125.
