THE IDEC INDEX
Here is boxing writer Keith Idec’s inside look at the sport:
FEATURED FIGHT: Nonito Donaire vs. Jessie Magdaleno. Donaire (37-3, 24 KOs), a four-division champion, will defend his WBO world super bantamweight title against Las Vegas’ Magdaleno (23-0, 17 KOs) on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Their scheduled 12-rounder will be one of three bouts broadcast before the pay-per-view main event between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas, the WBO welterweight champion.
LOCAL LOOK: The comeback bout of former WBO junior welterweight champion Kendall Holt was canceled Wednesday due to a right shoulder injury Holt sustained during training. Holt (28-6, 16 KOs), a Paterson native and Clifton resident, was supposed to oppose Puerto Rico’s Javier Garcia (8-13-1, 3 KOs) in a televised six-round welterweight fight Nov. 11 in Sloan, Iowa. Holt, 35, hasn’t fought since February 2013. Washington, D.C.’s Lamont Peterson (34-3-1, 17 KOs), then the IBF junior welterweight champion, beat Holt that night at D.C. Armory.
THE FINAL BELL: Pay-per-view main events always are replayed the following Saturday when HBO Sports or Showtime Sports produces those telecasts. Promoter Bob Arum’s company, Top Rank Inc., is independently producing the four-fight Pacquiao-Vargas show. Arum thinks not replaying the Pacquiao-Vargas fight a week later could have a positive impact on the amount of buys the card draws. If he’s right, it could lead to Top Rank producing Pacquiao pay-per-view shows moving forward.
