Lopez edges Veterans, earns another state trip in soccer
CORPUS CHRISTI — The Lopez Lobos know quite well the way to the University Interscholastic League state tournament in soccer.
It’s a path through the playoffs they’ve taken four times already, and now they’re going back to state again.
Lopez defeated Brownsville Veterans Memorial 1-0 thanks to a goal by Jose “Chevy” Echavarria just eight minutes into the match during Saturday’s Region IV-5A Tournament final at Corpus Christi’s Cabaniss Sports Complex.
The victory in the well-attended, all-Brownsville matchup earned the Lobos (17-4-6) a return appearance in the coming week’s state tournament, which starts Wednesday in Georgetown.
“This feels great,” said Ernesto Pulido, a senior midfielder for the Lobos. “We’re going for it all.”
Lopez doesn’t play its Class 5A state semifinal until Thursday. The state tournament final four pairings for the qualifying boys and girls teams in three classes (4A, 5A and 6A) are scheduled to be announced today, with seedings based on records.
The Lobos captured the 4A state title in 2004 and finished as the 5A state runner-up in 2009. They also advanced to state in 2014 and 2016, but lost in the semifinals both times.
A fifth trip to state by the Lobos is the most by any Rio GrandeValley school in soccer. Had Brownsville Veterans won, it would have been the first time for the Chargers to advance to Georgetown.
