WestConn roundup Field hockey almost stuns Keene State

The WestConn field hockey team was 27 seconds away from upending five-time defending LEC champion Keene State College, but the Owls came from behind to defeat the Colonials 2-1 in double overtime Tuesday evening.

The goal came with 4:50 left in the second overtime period and dropped WestConn to 5-4 (3-2 LEC)

“That is a heart-breaking loss that only fuels us for the next conference opponent,” said WestConn coach Dani McDonnell in a press release. “The team played with great heart and fight against a great team.”

The Colonials snatched a lead 54:59 into the game when Stephanie Clapp scored her first goal of the season. She was set up by a quick pass from junior forward Morgan Matthews (Bethel).

Keene State tied the game with 27 seconds left off a penalty corner, sending the game to overtime. WestConn sophomore goalie Neve Manion made 11 saves, including three in the first overtime period.
