High schools: Outside the Box, April 27
From inside the lines to out, Express-News staff writer Terrence Thomas takes a look back and a look ahead at the high school sports landscape:
20: Area athletes named first-team All-State by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization (TASCO). Johnson’s Andrew McIlvoy and Seth Holzmann, Clark’s Luis Garcia and Reagan’s Jacob Galan made it in Class 6A, Kerrville Tivy’s Stephen Canty and Josh Bestor made it in 5A, and Bandera’s Aidan Keane and Garrett Delong, Fredericksburg’s Ian Kendrick and Canyon Lake’s Grayson Rohrbacher earned the honor in 4A.
On the girls side, Reagan’s Taylor Olson, Christa Moravitz and Lexi Burton and Steele’s Gisselle Kozarski made it for 6A, Alamo Heights’ Daria Britton, Dawson Brinkley and Lauren Bolish made it in 5A, and Pleasanton’s Madelyn Bird and Winter Baumann and Fredericksburg’s Julia Freeborn earned the accolade in 4A.
200: Wins for Johnson softball coach Jennifer Fox during her nine seasons at the school. Fox reached the milestone during the Jaguars’ 2-1 win over Corpus Christi Carroll on April 21. She has 338 wins overall.
Odds and ends
Headed to the Hall: Reagan girls soccer coach Frankie Whitlock has been selected for induction into the TASCO Hall of Honor. The ceremony is scheduled for November in Galveston during the group’s annual fall clinic. She will be the fifth area coach to receive the honor, joining former Madison girls coach Audrey Ambrose, former Alamo Heights boys coach Bruce Fink, Clark boys coach Walter Rule and New Braunfels Canyon boys coach Rob Rush.
Whitlock has a 600-119-70 overall record, which also included stints at Churchill and Judson.
