Key losses: Alyssa Nelson (8.1 ppg.)

Key returning players: Meyers (7.3 ppg.), Winters (5.5 ppg.).

Key newcomers: Lapczynski (5.5 ppg. at Elkhart Memorial), Nelson, McSurley.

Outlook: Dermody is the fourth coach in five years, taking over a downtrodden program that’s won a scant 18 games in the last six seasons and hasn’t had a winning record since 2004. Scoring (30.9 ppg.) and turnovers were the most glaring weaknesses a year ago and Dermody hopes Lapczynski, a move-in from Elkhart Memorial, and freshmen Nelson and McSurley can help remedy those problems as he implements a physical, up-tempo style. “We’re always going to have one of those few girls in to break the press,” Dermody said. The roster remains small with Meyers the only player over 5-8. “She should be a load,” Dermody said. “She plays down on the block as well as any girl. She’s strong. She’s going to really work hard, hit the boards, score inside, play good defense. She also has good lateral quickness, which at (5-11) is a big help.” Other key players are Winters and Strauch with several others vying for minutes. “I feel we can compete with the teams we play,” Dermody said. “Everything we do during the season is to get ready for the (state) tournament. Nobody’s going to remember the team who won 20, then lost their first (sectional) game. They’re going to remember the team that lost a few games, then made a deep run. We’ve just got to be patient. If we have a good day, we need to have another good day and keep putting good days in a row. We’re just trying to build a culture.”
