Jordan Poole, Michigan freshman, unlikely hero with last-second winner vs. Houston
No. 3 Michigan beat No. 6 Houston 64-63 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on a last-second 3-pointer by freshman guard Jordan Poole.
Poole previously had scored five points in 10 minutes off the bench, but he nonetheless was the beneficiary of the play Michigan coach John Beilein called, known as “Indiana” to the Wolverines.
Michigan advanced to meet either No. 2 North Carolina or No. 7 Texas AM in the Sweet 16.
It was the fourth game-winning shot in the last 10 seconds of a game during the 2018 tournament. The Cougars themselves did so in the first round when Rob Gray made a last-second layup against San Diego State, and Loyola-Chicago pulled off late game-winners against both Miami and Tennessee.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, only three other years in tournament history saw more than four such game-winners during the first weekend -- and the 2018 tournament still has eight more second-round games to go.
