Gio Gonzalez to miss rest of postseason for Brewers
Gio Gonzalez’s wild season has come to an end.
The former Nationals pitcher told ESPN the Milwaukee Brewers will be replacing him on the 25-man roster after he suffered an ankle injury in Tuesday’s Game 4 of the NLCS. That means even if the Brewers make the World Series, Gonzalez won’t be eligible to pitch for the rest of the postseason.
Gonzalez, who spent 6 seasons with the Nationals, was traded to Milwaukee on Aug. 31. The trade left Gonzalez emotional, but the Nationals moved on with the pitcher in the final year of his contract and the club far from the playoffs.
In his final season with the Nationals, Gonzalez regressed, seeing his ERA rise to 4.57 in 2018 from 2.96 in 2017.
But then a funny thing happened to Gonzalez after he was traded: He started pitching well again.
In five regular-season starts with the Brewers, he had a 2.13 ERA with a 3-0 record. Gonzalez even started Game 162 for the Brewers, who needed a win to force a tie-breaking Game 163 against the Chicago Cubs in order to determine who would win the National League Central.
That game, Gonzalez went five innings, striking out two batters while allowing just three hits en route to an 11-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.
In the postseason, Gonzalez appeared twice against the Los Angeles Dodgers, starting Game 1 and 4. In Game 1, he went two innings, giving up a home run to Manny Machado.
On Tuesday, Gonzalez lasted just one full inning, landing awkwardly on his ankle while attempting to field a comebacker from Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig in the second.
