Capitals place Nathan Walker on waivers with Travis Boyd returning

The Washington Capitals placed forward Nathan Walker on waivers and re-assigned defenseman Aaron Ness to AHL Hershey on Sunday, making room in the salary cap for center Travis Boyd to come off injured reserve.

If Walker clears waivers after 24 hours, he likely will join Ness in Hershey.

Boyd has yet to play this season, as he began the year on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

Walker was the first Australian-raised player to make the NHL and the first Australian to win a Stanley Cup last year with Washington. But he was also waived once last year, and did not clear. Edmonton picked Walker up for a brief spell, but the Oilers waived him after a month and he re-joined the Capitals.

Coincidentally, the Oilers come to town Monday night to play the Capitals.
