According to the Texas Relocation Report 2021, more than 500,000 people relocated to the state in 2019. Tesla founder Elon Musk also recently announced his decision to move to Texas. The state has welcomed more than 200,000 residents from outside the country in the same year as well.

The Texas Relocation Report was created after gathering information from the U.S. Census Bureau. It was compiled by Texas Realtors.

But this is not a recent trend. A lot of people have been moving to Texas for some time now. There is increased demand for a Texas moving company for cities like Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. According to reports, 4.2 million people have moved to the state since the last census in 2010, which is a growth of 16.4%. This places Texas just behind the 17.4% population growth rate of Utah.

More Than 500,000 People Move to Texas for 7 Straight Years

While so many people are moving to Texas, a few of the state’s residents are also moving out. But even then, The Lone Star State reports an overall gain of 100,000 new residents for 2019.

It is the 7th year in a row that the state has seen a 500,000 plus inflow of residents. Most of the Texas movers are from California and Florida. The U.S. Census Bureau data says that more than 687,000 Californians have moved to Texas over the last decade.

Dallas, Austin Both Popular for Relocation

Louisiana, Oklahoma, Illinois, Georgia, New Mexico, and Arizona are the other top states from where the residents are moving to Texas. Austin, Midland, San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston are the most popular cities. According to a report published by the Redfin real estate brokerage firm on February 4, the city of Dallas is attracting a lot of inflows. Job website LinkedIn, on the other hand, reports that Austin has attracted many professionals, especially during the pandemic.

Top Reasons Why So Many Are Moving to Texas

1. Jobs – The gas and oil boom has turned Texas into an economic powerhouse. Houston, especially, has emerged as the world energy capital. There have also been strong growths in business services, manufacturing, and the technology sector. The state also has a strong military presence, boosted by increased defense spending after 9/11. Many businesses are relocating to Texas because of the high number of university graduates.

Many Dallas movers say they are moving not just for more employment opportunities but also for higher wages. For example, in Dallas, the average annual wage is $67,500. The state’s average salary is around $38,000, which is $9,000 higher than the national average.

2. Texas is cheaper – For most people, the San Francisco Bay Area and New York are both too expensive. Houston, on the other hand, is much cheaper. So your paycheck will go much more here. Houston has a low cost of living, thanks to the lower transport and utility costs, consumer prices, and housing feel the CEO of  Austin Movers. It is likely to stay that way for a while, feels the CEO.

In Houston, the ratio of median home price to median annual household income is just 2.9. In San Francisco, it is 6.7. In LA, SF, and NYC, most people are always struggling to make ends meet. In Texas, however, a middle-class family always has a better chance of getting what they want.

3. Homes – Land is also cheaper. The process of land acquisition is easy. The time required, compared to many other states, is much less, from when you get the building permit to the construction of your home. Texas has fewer regulations. The land supply is also abundant.

Housing is also affordable. The cost will depend on the city and neighborhood, but the state’s average cost is just over $177,000. The median home price in San Antonio is only about $243,000.

4. Low tax – There are seven states in the US, including Texas, where there is no personal state income tax. There are tax incentives for businesses as well. Legislators have recently reduced more than $1 billion from business taxes.

5. Family-friendly – The state is very popular with families. There is an above-average number of children in many cities. There are good elementary and grad schools, both public and private. The large cities have good school districts, like the Highland Park Independent School District and Houston Independent School District. There are renowned institutions for higher education as well, such as Texas A&M and the University of Texas.

The education scores are high in national tests in math, science, and reading for 4th and 8th graders. For instance, in 8th-grade math, Texas students scored higher than the national average. They outscored the students from Florida, New York, and California.

6. Many big cities – The Lone Star State has 6 of the country’s 20 largest cities, including Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. The standard of living is high in all of them. On the other hand, in Illinois, for example, you just have Chicago if you want to live in a big city. Or you have to move to another state. This is why an Austin moving company reports getting more relocation inquiries than ever before.

7. Many recreation and outdoor activities – Texas offers year-round activities like biking, hiking, and running. There are large outdoor spaces and parks in most cities. Houston has Hermann Park. Houston also has the Space Center. There are museums, zoos, aquariums, dance, theater, orchestras, symphonies, fine dining, and national parks. The state also hosts many events and festivals throughout the year.

8. Diversity – The bustling and vibrant culture of Texas can be accounted for by its diversity. For example, 145 languages are spoken in Houston. Texas is the 2nd most diverse state in the country after California. Its culture of inclusion and richness is a big appeal for many people.

9. Manageable traffic – Texas has places with difficult traffic. But, in general, the traffic situation is largely manageable in the largest cities. The periods of heavy traffic and commute times are shorter. The traditional rush hour is not as bad as so many other cities in the US. An executive of a Dallas moving company says that it’s a big relief for many commuters.

10. Beautiful weather – Some parts of the state have hot and humid weather. But most of the state has mild weather, almost throughout the year. This makes it easy to enjoy the outdoors. The state’s overall mild weather is a big draw for people living in places with long and cold weather.

Many job opportunities, cheaper homes, lower cost of living, great weather and food, many outdoor activities, good schools, friendly people… there are many reasons why so many people and even businesses are moving to Texas.
