Memphis officer hit by car, dragged while serving subpoena
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee police officer was injured when he was hit by a car, then dragged by the vehicle, while trying to serve a subpoena Wednesday, authorities said.
The Memphis Police Department said on Twitter that the unidentified officer was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the incident in a residential neighborhood.
Police said the officer went to a Memphis home and found the person who was supposed to receive the subpoena standing in the yard. Police said the person walked past the officer and got into the driver’s seat of a car, which had a passenger inside.
The officer tried to serve the subpoena though the open passenger door, but the driver backed up and hit the officer with the door, police said.
The driver continued to back up, dragging the officer and hitting a squad car, police said.
The driver was arrested, but the passenger fled the scene, police said.
