Steelhead rainbow trout leap up falls on way to spawning

ORLEANS, Vt. (AP) — Steelhead rainbow trout are starting to migrate upstream this time of year in Vermont on their way to spawning grounds, creating one of state’s top wildlife watching opportunities, the Fish and Wildlife Department said Friday.

The trout leap up waterfalls during the warmer days in mid-to-late April and sometimes into May, officials said.

Part of Willoughby Falls in Orleans is closed to fishing until June to protect the trout while they are spawning, the department said.

“Many people may not realize we have opportunities to watch fish in Vermont just like there are for birds and mammals,” Pete Emerson, a department fisheries biologist said in a written statement. “Witnessing these trout migrate is a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining healthy and connected waters to allow fish to thrive.”
