Red flag warning for fire danger
HARLINGEN -- The National Weather Service at Brownsville has issued a red flag warning due to critical fire weather conditions today for inland Cameron and Willacy counties, as well as Hidalgo, Kennedy, Starr, Zapata, Jim Hogg and Brooks counties.
Forecasters warn any outside fires are likely to quickly blaze out of control, and advise against burning.
A combination of extremely low humidity and strong winds of 20 mph gusting to 25 mph created the weather conditions.
The strong northwesterly winds follow a cold front, and have created conditions "favorable for erratic to extreme wildfire growth and spread," forecasters said.
Relative humidity levels range from the single digits in the western part of the Valley to around 20 percent in the east.
The most dangerous conditions will exist between noon and mid- to late afternoon Friday.
