A wildfire that has burned 800 acres of land southwest of American Falls is expected to be contained by Friday evening, authorities said.

The blaze, called the Coldwater Fire, was reported at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday. Fire engines were immediately dispatched to the scene. Five federal fire engines, the American Falls Fire Department, local farmers and a type II helicopter have been working to contain the flames.

On Friday, the size of the blaze increased from around 425 acres to 800 acres in size. The fire was burning on both federal and private lands in grass, shrubs and junipers. However, officials said no structures were being threatened by the flames.

“Two engines are conducting a small burnout operation on the western edge of the fire to prevent it from spreading further in that direction,” a statement from the Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center said. “The helicopter is dropping water on torching junipers in the steep cliffs to the north.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
