MORGAN COUNTY — A mountain lion was killed Tuesday night after being hit by a vehicle, according to Sgt. Corey Stark from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

The cougar was hit April 17 in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 close to mile marker 92 and the Mountain Green exit, Stark said. No vehicles were stopped at the scene when officers arrived.

They believe the mountain lion was about a year and a half old.

Police were dispatched to the scene about 11:45 p.m. and told it was a dead deer on the side of the road. When they arrived, police quickly found it was not a deer, but instead a mountain lion.

Technicians from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources were sent to the scene around midnight Tuesday, according to Phil Douglass, conservation outreach manager for the division.

While cougars being hit by cars isn’t common, Douglass said it isn’t rare for this sort of thing to happen.

“This is a good reminder for people to watch out for wildlife when they’re on the road,” Douglass said.
