John William Nolan Sr., 84, Brandon, passed away peacefully March 8, 2017, at Markesan Resident Home surrounded by his family.

John was born Aug. 4, 1932, the son of Francis and Mary Meyer Nolan. John was a 1951 graduate of Plymouth High School. He attended St. Mary’s College, Winona, Minnesota, and later served in the U.S. Army. He finished his studies at Lakeland College in Wisconsin, graduating with a B.S. degree in business. On Jan. 28, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Rose Luedtke of Cascade. John was in sales his entire married life. His greatest professional achievement was establishing, owning and operating the Nolan Insurance Agency for 35 years. John was also Brandon village president, a volunteer firefighter, scoutmaster, member of the Lions Club, served on the Waupun Memorial Hospital Board, and the St. Brendan Church Council. But the role John loved most was that of a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa.


John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey; son, Dennis (Beatrice) Nolan of Madison; daughter, Christine (Patrick Stevens) Nolan of Lake Mills; daughter, Kathleen (Randall) Mulder of Waupun; son, Michael (Julie) Nolan of Brandon; son, Patrick (Kristin) Nolan of Kalamazoo, Michigan; daughter, Elizabeth (Bruce) Bille of Brandon; daughter, Jennifer (James) Baudry of Fond du Lac; and son, John (Bonnie) Nolan of Brandon; 26 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary (Robert) Steger of Plymouth; sister-in-law, Janet Nolan of De Pere; sister-in law, Joyce Grossheim of Plymouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by two infant sons; his parents, Mary and Francis Nolan; his brother, James Nolan; and many dear friends and family who are waiting to deal him in on the next hand of sheepshead.

The family expresses its sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at Markesan Resident Home and hospice volunteers who became John’s second family. They treated John and his family with the utmost respect and dignity during a very difficult time. The family is forever grateful.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waupun, with the Rev. David Greenfield officiating. A private burial will follow. Friends and relatives may call on the family Friday, March 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Werner Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun. There will be no visitation prior to the service Saturday.
