Famous Nebraskans take the stage at Cody Elementary

Naomi Clutter, a fourth-grade student at Cody Elementary School, portrays Evelyn Sharp at the school’s Famous Nebraskans’ Night. The young, 1930s-40s pilot wasn’t the only famous Nebraskan to give a speech while a slideshow made by the student played. Names like Nicholas Sparks, Larry the Cable Guy, Warren Buffett and Red Cloud also took the stage.

The students have spent six to eight weeks researching, preparing their slideshows and costumes, teacher Jill Walters said. Students chose their own Nebraskans from a list of about 100 names.

“This is all a quarter’s worth of work,” said teacher Sarah Lewis, who said teachers got the idea from past district teachers.

The event met reading, writing and social studies state standards.

“It brings the families in too,” Walters said. “And that’s very important.”
