Benfica beats Porto 2-0 to take league lead
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Benfica held a minute’s silence in honor of former club great Eusebio before beating title rival FC Porto 2-0 at home on Sunday to go top of the Portuguese league.
Forward Rodrigo Moreno opened the scoring for Benfica in the 13th minute, and defender Ezequiel Garay doubled the advantage in the 53rd.
Porto played the final 15 minutes with 10 men after Danilo was dismissed for a second yellow card. It was coach Jorge Jesus’ 100th league win with Benfica.
Benfica’s first victory over Porto at the Stadium of Light since the 2009-10 season lifted it to first place. Sporting Lisbon is two points behind after drawing 0-0 with Estoril on Saturday. Porto is a further point back.
“It was a great game, with some moving moments with our fans to make a great party,” said Benfica defender Luisao. “We had a hard week with a lot of emotion and sadness and we called on our supporters to give us a boost.
“There couldn’t have been a better homage for Eusebio.”
Eusebio died Jan. 5 at 71.
Also, Nacional beat visiting Gil Vicente 2-0. It is in fifth place, one point behind Estoril.
Academica left Pacos Ferreira in last place with a 4-2 win.
