Illinois post office to be renamed for fallen Army sergeant
FAIRVIEW, Ill. (AP) — The family of a central Illinois man killed while serving in Afghanistan will join public officials for a ceremony to rename the local post office in his honor.
The post office in Fairview will be formally renamed the Sergeant Douglas J. Riney Post Office during an Aug. 10 ceremony.
Riney was born and raised in Fairview. He graduated from Spoon River Valley High School and was a volunteer firefighter before he joined the army. He died in October 2016 in Kabul. Riney was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart.
U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos sponsored legislation to rename his hometown post office. She’ll join his family and other community members at the ceremony.
