Girls hoops: Late free throws lift Horicon over Phoenix in finale

February 17, 2018 GMT

Payton Marvin was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1.9 seconds left and hit all the ensuing free throws in Horicon’s 48-47 girls basketball win at Luther Prep.

“It looked to me like she was passing it,” Luther Prep coach Randy Mensching said. “It was a questionable call.”

Luther Prep (10-10) erased an 11-point gap with nine minutes to play before the ending went awry. Senior guard Jewel St. Germaine led the Phoenix with a double-double including a game-high 17 points to go with 12 rebounds and three steals.

“We did a nice job of fighting back,” Mensching said. “Our press turned them over and created a spark.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have that spark earlier. We’ve got to have that energy for a full game.”

Senior guard Gabi Tomlin added 15 points, seven steals and three rebounds. Junior forward Abbie Burke pulled down six rebounds and senior guard Alyssa Hildebrandt supplied four rebounds.

“I think we shot under 20 percent,” Mensching said. “We had opportunities.”

Junior guard Ally Goba swiped three steals for the Phoenix, who host Columbus in Tuesday’s Division 3 regional opener.
