$1.9M in Mellon Foundation grants aid UIC humanities studies

CHICAGO (AP) — The University of Illinois at Chicago has been awarded two grants totaling nearly $1.9 million to expand undergraduate research in the humanities and to aid doctoral candidates in Latino humanities studies.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grants include $1 million as part of the Engage Humanities Initiative over 4 ½ years. It will be used to teach and mentor undergraduates to explore and conduct research in the humanities. That’s the study of the individual, society and the interplay between the two.

UIC faculty at the school’s Institute for the Humanities will teach seminars and introduce students to the field and guide them in research methods and developing topics.

Another $884,000 Mellon grant will support of doctoral studies as part of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research .
