State gives scholarship to children of war veterans
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Department of Education has issued $5,000 to two children of veterans to help with their college expenses.
The scholarships, which are part of the Orphan of Veterans program, went to Mariah Carroll of Durham, who is attending the University of New Hampshire, and Jewel Bernier of Milton, who is attending Plymouth State University. They received their $2,500 checks Nov. 8 in a ceremony also attended by the adjutant and deputy adjutant general of the New Hampshire National Guard and the commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Education.
Carroll’s father was a combat infantryman in Vietnam and earned four bronze stars. Bernier’s mother served in the Air Force during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. They both died due to injuries they suffered during their service.
