Rio Grande’s Holden named River States player of week

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - University of Rio Grande sophomore and former Wheelersburg High School girls basketball star Sydney Holden was named the River States Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the RedStorm to a pair of victories.

A 5-foot-9 guard, Holden averaged 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game as Rio Grande went 2-0 at the NAIA DII Showcase in Kingsport, Tennessee. She shot 48 percent from the field (10 for 21) and made five 3-pointers.

Holden tallied 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals in a 76-65 win against Washington Adventist on Saturday night. In a 77-76 victory over Georgetown (Ky.) on Sunday she put up 18 points, including the game-winning bucket on a runner with 1.8 seconds remaining, to go along with six rebounds.

Holden, daughter of former Marshall University standout Rodney Holden, was 4 for 8 from long range and 4 for 4 from the foul line in Sunday’s victory.

Rio Grande (8-1) plays its next game at Point Park University in the RSC opener on Wednesday.
