Cozad sleep lab approved for accreditation

April 27, 2017

The Cozad Community Health System’s sleep program was recently approved for accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care Inc.

All sleep labs in the state must be accredited to offer services to Medicare patients. But it’s not just adults who can benefit from the facility, according to a press release from the hospital. Children can also be evaluated for sleep disorders.

One of the most common sleep disorders is sleep apnea, according to the National Sleep Foundation. A patient with sleep apnea may stop breathing repeatedly during the night. A number of things can cause sleep apnea, but one of the most common is obesity, according to the foundation.

According to the hospital press release, obesity is becoming more prevalent in children, and obese children have an increased risk of breathing-related sleep disorders.

The ability to perform sleep studies on pediatric patients means that the hospital can detect these disorders sooner.

Treatment may help reduce symptoms and prevent additional complications later in life, according to the hospital.
