Slicer girls hoops thumps foe
La Porte’s girls basketball team easily won 58-37 at Fort Wayne Wayne on Saturday afternoon. Riley Ott guided the Slicers (8-5) with 22 points, and Tamisha Jackson had a big night with 18 points. Olivia West scored nine, and Ryan Steppe had six rebounds. La Porte outscored the Generals 16-7 in the first quarter and 35-14 in the first half.
Westville boys hoops drops first decision
Westville’s boys basketball team lost its first game of the season, 58-53 to Washington Township at home on Saturday night. Brandon Watkins led the Blackhawks (6-1, 3-1 Porter County Conference) with 18 points, and Cade Albers had 15 points and five rebounds. Tyrese Walker added 13 points. Westville got outscored 13-7 in the first period and trailed 33-21 at half.
Westville girls hoops claims pair
Westville’s girls basketball team cruised to a 72-46 win at Covenant Christian on Friday night. The Blackhawks’ Ashley Wilkerson broke the school record for 3-pointers in a game with seven, finishing with 21 points. Morgan Shreves had 17 points and six rebounds, and Mary Parkman had 15 points. Sarah Weston had an all-around game with 11 points, nine boards and seven assists, and Kivi Pender grabbed 15 rebounds. Westville’s JV prevailed 36-32. Nicole Albers led the team with a game-high 11 points and had five steals, and Chloe Fortune had six points. Ali Hisick recorded four points and four rebounds.
Westville routed Washington Township 83-51 at home on Saturday night. The Blackhawks’ Parkman earned 36 points, five steals and four assists, and Wilkerson had 16 points. Shreves tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Westville improved to 10-3. Westville’s JV won 32-19. Peyton Rodgers and Albers each scored 11, and Albers had seven steals.
Tiger boys hoops bests Boone
La Crosse’s boys basketball team downed Boone Grove 49-36 at home on Friday night. Kaleb Frazier led the Tigers (1-5, 1-2 Porter County Conference) with 17 points, and Dylan Claypool had 11 points and five rebounds. Wes Brust added 10 points and seven boards. La Crosse outscored the Wolves 10-2 in the third quarter and won the second half, 29-12.
Glenn boys hoops falters versus LaVille
John Glenn’s boys basketball team fell 73-58 to LaVille on Saturday night at home. The Falcons led 17-7 after the first quarter, but got outscored 66-41 the rest of the way. Glenn dropped to 3-4.
Slicer girls swimmers drop road meet
La Porte’s girls swim team lost 133-49 at Elkhart Central on Saturday. Four Slicers earned a season-best time in one or more of their events, Aranza Leon, Monica Hernandez, Kayla Peo, and Savannah Galaviz.
New book on La Porte baseball now available
“Slicer Baseball, A Cut Above” is a 248-page hardcover book, similar in size to a high school yearbook, written about the history of La Porte Slicers baseball. This book chronicles the history of Slicer baseball from 1919 to the present. Eight State Championships, 13 final four teams, 21 regional championships, 35 sectional championships and 44 straight years of 20 or more wins will be highlighted. The book is detailed with many photos, stories and interviews with former Slicer players and coaches.
The book may now be purchased in the LPHS athletic department for $35. Books may also be ordered on the La Porte High School athletic department website at goslicers.com for $35, plus a $10 shipping fee.
Slicer basketball schedule changes
The La Porte boys and girls basketball teams have multiple schedule changes, starting with last Friday night. The boys JV and varsity games at South Bend Clay last Friday were postponed due to a conflict at Clay. They have been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, with JV starting at 2:30 p.m. CST. The Slicer JV and varsity boys basketball games this past Saturday night at Hobart were postponed and will be played on Thursday, Dec. 22. The JV game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The freshman boys game scheduled for Jan. 2 at Crown Point has been changed to Jan. 9, starting at 6 p.m., while the freshman girls game scheduled for Jan. 2 at La Porte against Crown Point has been changed to Jan. 3 at 6 p.m.
City boys basketball postponed Saturday
Michigan City’s JV and varsity boys basketball games at Penn on Saturday night were postponed due to the weather. The games are now scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 21, with a 5:15 p.m. CST JV start.
