Sanchez Vicario loses at Rexona Cup
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) _ Defending champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario continued her 1997 slide Wednesday, falling to Petra Langrova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3 at the $450,000 Rexona Cup.
The second-round loss by the top-seeded Sanchez Vicario was her earliest exit since being bounced in the second round of a tournament in Sydney, Australia, in January. The Spaniard, ranked No. 1 nearly two years ago but now No. 5, has yet to reach a final in 1997.
Her last title came on these red clay courts a year ago. She hasn’t been in a final since Tokyo last fall.
Against Langrova, Sanchez Vicario made numerous errors.
``I was just not concentrated out there,″ Sanchez Vicario said.
Two other seeds were upset Wednesday _ No. 5 Brenda Schultz McCarthy of the Netherlands and No. 8 Sandrine Testud of France.
Schultz McCarthy, one of the game’s hardest servers, was routed 6-2, 6-1 by Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France. Testud fell 6-3, 6-1 to Spain’s Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.
No. 2 Conchita Martinez of Spain was the first seed to reach the quarterfinals, downing Germany’s Barbara Rittner 7-5, 6-0.
In other matches, No. 7 Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania defeated Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3; Spain’s Magui Serna edged Catalina Cristea of Romania 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Olga Lugina of Ukraine downed Flora Perfetti of Italy 6-4, 6-1.
