Spokane police arrest killing suspect

December 6, 2018 GMT

A man was shot and killed Wednesday night north of Chattaroy, and within two hours a Spokane police officer spotted and arrested a man who will face murder charges.

Around 7 p.m., a woman found a man on the ground, bleeding, in 27000 block of North Bear Lake Road, approximately 14 miles north of the Division “Y” intersection in north Spokane, according to a news release from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, the man was dead, and the woman told officers she believed a family member had killed the man.

Detectives with the major crimes unit arrived and discovered that a vehicle was missing from the scene.

They reported the vehicle as stolen and quickly identified 24-year-old Trystn G. Higgins as a person of interest. The information was broadcast to all regional law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., an “attentive” Spokane police officer saw the stolen vehicle and alerted additional officers. The vehicle was stopped near East Sprague Avenue and South Cowley Street, in downtown Spokane, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Higgins was transported to the Public Safety Building where he was interviewed by detectives. He faces murder charges.
