Mustangs fall to Broncs 59-45 in non-conference play
NEEDLES — Mustang varsity basketball battled Parker’s Broncos hard but ultimately fell, 59-45, in non-conference action in The Corral Friday night.
Parker led all the way, up 14-10 after one, 29-17 at the half, and 38-23 after three. The Mustangs nearly matched Parker in the final stanza, going 20 to the Broncs’ 21 thanks in large part to Ivan Stone. Stone moved up from junior varsity late in the season and played only in the fourth quarter against Parker; he scored seven.
Semaj Howell was the only Mustang consistently successful against Parker’s strong defense and formidable ball handling. He scored 14. Doogie Harvey and Dawsen Yeager scored eight each.
Parker’s diminutive Estevan Moreno led the Broncos with 17. Probably right around five feet tall, Moreno had enough energy left over to perform a flat-footed back flip just to please the fans late in the game.
Austin Allen scored 15 for the Broncs.
The Mustangs are back into NIAA 2A South League action with road games against Mountain View Jan. 29, Lincoln County Feb. 1 and Adelson Feb. 5. They host Calvary Chapel in the regular season’s final game Feb. 7. At this point it appears they must win three of the four to make the playoffs.
