Mitchell hosts Veterans Day Program
MITCHELL — The public is invited to attend the annual Veterans Day Program hosted by Mitchell Public Schools. The staff, students and community would like to honor all veterans and active servicemen with a special program on Friday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. The program will be held in the high school gym and there will be special seating on the floor for all veterans and their guests.
Following the program, veterans and their guests are invited to dinner at the elementary cafeteria.
Christina Hays from Mitchell, Nebraska, will be the guest speaker. Hays, a Navy Veteran, was born and raised in the Panhandle of Nebraska. She graduated from high school in 1998 from Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and then attended Western Nebraska Community College from 1998 to 2000. In 2000, Christina joined the Navy. She attended Naval Nuclear Propulsion Training Command in Charleston, S.C., and Ballston Spa, N.Y., and served on board the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) out of Everett, Wash., for 5 years as a Nuclear Machinists Mate and Engineering Laboratory Technician. She then served at the Navy Recruiting Station in Meridian, Idaho, as recruiter-in-charge. Christina was discharged from the Navy in 2012 and returned to Nebraska.
Hays and her husband, Zacharie Hays, are currently serving in the U.S. Navy Reserves. They have two daughters who attend Mitchell Elementary School. The family resides in Mitchell. Hays is using veteran’s benefits to attend Chadron State College where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in education degree and will graduate in May 2019.
