LOCAL BRIEFS: Missouri baseball picked last in division in Coaches Preseason Poll
On Thursday, the 2019 Southeastern Conference Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll was announced, and the Missouri baseball team was voted to finish in last place in the SEC East. The Tigers received 26 votes, the second-lowest amount of votes in the entire conference. Only Alabama received fewer, garnering 21 votes. LSU was the top vote-getter, receiving 88 votes.
Kameron Misner named to preseason Golden Spikes Award watchlist
Kameron Misner, a junior outfielder and first baseman on the Missouri baseball team, was named to the Golden Spikes Award preseason watchlist. The award is given to the top amateur baseball player for the 2019 season. The list features players from NCAA Division I, Division II and the NAIA, as well as high school players. The last Tiger to make the list was right-hander Tanner Houck in 2017.
Tolton girls basketball postponed due to weather
The Tolton girls basketball team was set to have a rematch with St. Francis Borgia on Thursday night, but the game was postponed due to weather. The game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Friday before the boys game at Tolton. In the team’s previous matchup in Washington, the Knights were victorious, beating the Trailblazers 62-42.
Class 3 District 9 tournament brackets revealed
The Class 3 District 9 basketball tournament brackets, featuring Tolton’s boys and girls basketball teams, have been announced. In the boys tournament, the 15-4 Trailblazers were given the No. 1 seed, while the 11-10 girls team was given the No. 5 seed. The boys district is especially tough, as seven of the eight teams are at .500 or above. This district also features three Missouri Basketball Coaches Association top-10-ranked teams in Class 3: No. 5 Blair Oaks (16-5), sixth-ranked Tolton and No. 9 Southern Boone County (18-2). The girls team will face South Callaway at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in Linn, while the boys team will face Fatima at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Linn.
73 Missouri student-athletes named to SEC Fall Honor Roll
On Thursday, the SEC announced its Fall 2018 Academic Honor Roll, which featured 73 Missouri student-athletes. The honor roll features cross country, football, soccer and volleyball athletes, and it is based on the grades from spring, summer and fall 2018 terms.
Missouri will send two athletes to SEC SAAC meeting
Two athletes will represent Missouri athletics at this year’s SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Council meeting. Redshirt sophomore wrestler Jake Bohlken and redshirt junior volleyball player Riley Sents are the Tigers’ representatives at the conference, which takes place Friday and Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Missouri alumni compete in Pebble Beach and Web.com Tour
On Thursday, several notable Missouri golfers were in first-round action of golf tournaments across the country. Peter Malnati finished at even par and is tied for 87th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, California. Hayden Buckley and William Harrold are both competing in the the Panama Championship as part of the Web.com Tour. Buckley finished 1-over par and is tied for 48th while Harrold shot 2-over par and is tied for 72nd place.
Stephens basketball game Thursday canceled
The Stephens College basketball game scheduled for Thursday against Park University was canceled due to weather conditions.
Stephens (4-19, 2-15 American Midwest Conference) will face Missouri Baptist (6-17, 5-14 AMC) on Saturday in St. Louis.
