F45 Training Latest addition to fitness scene arriving

July 5, 2018

A group-training gym is set to open later this summer in Stamford’s South End, marking the latest in a series of health and wellness establishments to open in that section of the city.

The local franchisees of the F45 Training chain plan to launch the center in the mixed-use Harbor Point development in late August, at 121 Towne St., between the Harlan Social restaurant and the Pink Soda Blow Dry Bar. The approximately 2,600-square-foot space formerly housed office tenants.

“This is a brand we knew Stamford really needed, so we thought it would be an excellent brand to bring here,” said Stamford F-45 co-owner Reid Steinberg. “And we believe we’ve found the ideal location.”

Created in Australia in 2012, F45 now operates with approximately 300 franchises across the U.S.

The “F” stands for “functional” and the “45” refers to the duration of the classes, which focus on circuit training and draw from a library of more than 3,500 exercises. The variation aims to ensure clients do not do the same workout twice, according to F45 officials.

So far, the Stamford franchise has sold about 60 “foundation” memberships.

“The team environment is going to be very important here,” Steinberg said. “We want people to feel happy when they work out here.”

Steinberg and co-owners Lou Getzelman and Anthony Licitra — all of whom are Stamford residents — met several years ago while doing CrossFit training in Stamford. Later, they worked out at the F45 center in Dix Hills, N.Y., convincing them of the soundness of the latter model.

“Classes there showed us F45 was exactly what we were looking for, with interval training, group fitness and workouts that change every day,” Steinberg said.

The nearest F45 franchises to Stamford are in Fairfield and Port Chester, N.Y. A Westport center is scheduled to open in December.

Among other recently opened health-and-wellness establishments in the South End, Remedy Bodyworks launched last November, at 36 Dyke Lane, and Haute Sauna started last January, at 792 Pacific St.
