Mets Send Huskey to Mariners
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Butch Huskey, whose playing time had diminished in New York, was traded today by the Mets to the Seattle Mariners for minor league pitcher Lesli Brea.
Huskey, 26, hit .252 with 13 home runs and 59 RBIs last season. The Mets had a surplus of outfielders, and signed free agent Rickey Henderson on Sunday.
``With the way our team is configured now, he was not going to have the opportunity to get at-bats,″ Mets general manager Steve Phillips.
Huskey was considered defensive liability for the Mets, and might have a better chance in the AL, which has the DH. He is one of the last remaining players in the majors wearing No. 42, which was retired in 1997 in honor of Jackie Robinson.
Brea, a 20 right-hander, was 3-4 with 12 saves and 2.76 ERA in 49 games for Class A Wisconsin in the Midwest League. He struck out 86 in 58 2-3 innings.
