5K runners raise money for high school teams
FLORENCE, S.C. – More than 100 runners turned out Saturday morning to raise money for Florence’s three high school cross country teams by running through neighborhoods around the Florence Family YMCA in the Chick-fil-A Back to School 5K.
“We have three high schools’ cross country teams, and we’re going to divide the money up between the three ,” said Frankie Humphrey, cross country coach at Wilson High School . “That’s how we fund going to races and paying for races.”
Cross country runners from Wilson, West and South Florence High Schools were on hand in numbers to participate in the race.
Humphrey said he had 91 runners registered as of 4 p.m. Friday and expected at least another 30 to register on race day.
Pavement races, he said, draw greater numbers than trail races.
Michael Griffin won the race with a time of 17:01. Taylor Barnes, the 17th overall finisher, was tops in the women’s division with a time of 21:02. All of the runners finished the course in less than an hour, with the final runner crossing the line at 59:58.
The YMCA is the ideal place for the race, because it is a neutral site for the schools, Humphrey said.
