St. Mary’s hosts annual Athletics Banquet to honor Rocket athletes
MOUNT CARMEL -- St. Mary’s School hosted its annual Athletics Banquet in the school gymnasium on Wednesday, May 8, honoring athletes for their performances this past calendar season.
Among the sports that had athletes recognized were volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball and track.
For volleyball, the B team saw Nora Jones being recognized for having the most digs, Madison Stevens for the most kills, Emily Gottman for the Attitude Award and Sarah McCorkle for the most aces. For the A team, Savannah Zimmerman earned the most serves, Lexi Stevens for the most kills, Lilly Gottman and Camryn Strine each with the most digs, Anna Gill had the most aces and Ava Harrington for the Attitude Award.
In boys basketball, Blake Strine was awarded with the Leadership Award, Brady Porter was given the Defensive Player of the Year award and Elliott Acree earned the Offensive Player of the Year award.
For girls basketball, Madison Stevens earned the Newcomer of the Year award, Zimmerman was given the awards for Offensive Player of the Year and Free Throw Player of the Year, Mady Young achieved a share of the Free Throw Player of the Year and Gill earned the Defensive Player of the Year. Zimmerman and Young were each named WEAA All-Conference First Team at the banquet as well.
Lastly in track, special recognition was given to Ava Harrington, Lily Keepes and Sarah McCorkle for advancing to the State Track Meet on Saturday, May 11 and for McCorkle, who broke two WEAA JV Conference Track Meet records this season.
Mark and Susan Zimmerman were recognized during the banquet by Nikki Fullop of the SMS School Board and principal Cindy Brogan, for their contribution and dedication to St. Mary’s School. They will be resigning from SMS Athletics at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.
