UPDATE: Man Struck, Killed by Train in Ayer
AYER -- A 33-year-old man carrying a bicycle was killed after he was struck by a commuter rail train near the Ayer station Tuesday afternoon, according to MBTA police.
The man was trespassing on the right of way roughly 400 yards east of the station when he was struck by an inbound train on Track 1, police said.
At around 2 p.m., MBTA police assigned to the North District received a radio call regarding a person possibly struck by the Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line. Multiple transit police units, along with the Ayer Fire Department responded to the scene.
Emergency crews on the scene declined to comment on the accident out of respect for the victim’s family.
Police remained on the scene a couple of hours after the accident. The train that struck the 33-year-old sat motionless on the track until about 4:50 p.m. when it pulled away from the scene.
Middlesex District Attorney’s Office personnel were on scene to investigate the accident along with MBTA detectives. Foul play is not suspected, according to police.
