Briggs closed on Feb. 19, but lots of activities rest of week
All Briggs Lawrence County Public Libraries will be closed for Presidents Day on Monday, Feb. 19.
Presidents Day is an American holiday established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, commander of the Continental Army and first president of the United States.
As the first federal holiday to honor an American president, the holiday was originally celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday of Feb. 22. In 1968, Congress decided to also honor President Abraham Lincoln (birthday of Feb. 12), and the Monday Holidays Act went into effect in 1971, making the third Monday in February Presidents Day, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Family Movie Night in Ironton will be on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 4 p.m., and Family Movie Night at South Point will be on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. Both library locations will be showing the movie “Wonder.” According to the Briggs Library event calendar, “Based on the New York Times best-seller, ‘Wonder’ tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream school for the first time. It is rated PG and is 113 minutes long. Children may bring a blanket and a pillow for comfort. Some light snacks will be provided, but children are welcome to bring their own.”
Events for children, tweens, and teens the week of Feb. 20-22:
• Toddler Time (18 months-2 years) at 11 a.m. at Ironton on Tuesday.
• Preschool Storytimes (3-5 years) at 11 a.m. at Proctorville on Tuesday; South Point on Wednesday; and Chesapeake on Thursday.
