Mattison, Velazquez earn Mountain West weekly honors
BOISE - Boise State running back Alexander Mattison was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week Monday, while kicker/punter Joel Velazquez earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Mattison rushed for 242 yards - the thirst most in a single game in Boise State history - and had three touchdowns in the Broncos’ 59-52 overtime win at Colorado State. His third touchdown in overtime proved to be the game winner.
He also had three catches for 44 yards to give him a school-record 286 yards from scrimmage.
Mattison has 919 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He needs just 81 yards to surpass the 1,000 yard mark. The Broncos have had a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the past eight seasons.
Velazquez executed a perfect onside kick that was recovered by Cedrick Wilson with 1:40 to play and led to the game-tying touchdown. He also had two punts that averaged 40.0 yards and five of his eight kickoffs went for touchbacks.
For the year, he is averaging 40.3 yards over 18 punts and has a long of 63.
Boise State hosts Air Force for Senior Night Saturday at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN2.
The Broncos can clinch the Mountain Division title and a spot in the Mountain West Championship Game with a win over the Falcons - or a Wyoming loss to Fresno State.
