Yellow Jackets crush Cougars in second round
NORTH AUGUSTA 49, COLLETON COUNTY 14
NORTH AUGUSTA — The North Augusta football team’s “Unfinished Business” tour has at least one more tour date left to play.
The eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets took care of business again in the second round of the playoffs, routing Colleton County 49-14 Friday night to advance to the Class AAAA Lower State semifinals next week at Hartsville.
“The boys played well. They played hard,” said North Augusta head coach Brian Thomas. “A little rough start – too many penalties. We’ve got to fix that this week. You can’t beat good football teams with a lot of penalties. Did a better job in the second half.”
Tanner White rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 173 and another two scores, continuing his torrid pace as the Yellow Jackets (10-2) continue to slice up the opposition.
North Augusta rushed for 379 yards and five touchdowns as a team, giving the Yellow Jackets 556 yards of total offense against a Colleton County (4-8) team that used the big play to upset Lower Richland last week.
Those big plays didn’t come for the Cougars, though, except for one – a 76-yard touchdown pass on a deep ball that briefly tied the game at 7 apiece with 4:29 left in the first quarter.
North Augusta re-took the lead just 47 seconds later, and the rout was on.
“We’ve just got to continue to get better, continue to work on the fundamentals,” Thomas said. “I thought the offensive line played fantastic. I thought Tanner did a good job running the offense again tonight like he has the last few weeks. Defensively, we had one bad play. Other than that, I thought everything was pretty good.”
White’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Chris Wilder put the Yellow Jackets on the board – it was actually their third touchdown of the opening drive, but penalties wiped out 51- and 56-yard scores on consecutive plays.
A 37-yard scoring toss from White to Ben DeLaughter restored the lead, and White ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter to put North Augusta ahead 28-7 at the break.
That second touchdown run, a 21-yarder, came one play after Chris Torres picked off Colleton County quarterback Edwardian Stansel to quell any positive momentum the Cougars might have gained after intercepting White at their own 3.
North Augusta ran for two more scores in the third quarter, a 22-yarder by Jacari Buckson and a 39-yarder by White. Buckson rushed for 92 yards on just 13 carries. Each member of the duo surpassed 1,000 yards rushing in the regular season, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down now.
“They’re in sync,” Thomas said. “Jacari’s tough. It’s like having two running backs back there with a guy that can actually throw the ball, as well. It’s been great for us. It’s working well for us right now.”
North Augusta’s defense, aside from the one deep ball, was smothering. The Yellow Jackets picked off Stansel twice – one by Torres, one by Derian Gibson – and limited him to just 119 yards on his other 33 attempts, and the Cougars gained a big chunk of their 224 total yards after the game was well out of hand.
Caree Collier, the area’s leading tackler, added eight stops to his total. Torres, who’s second in the area, had six to go along with his interception, as did Gibson.
North Augusta is on the road next Friday at No. 1 Hartsville, which beat Brookland-Cayce 68-35 on Friday night.
