Embiid grabs conference

Rookie of the Month award

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid picked up a big honor. Embiid was named the NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for games that were played in October and November.

Embiid, a 7-foot-2, 275-pounder, leads all rookies in scoring, rebounding, blocks per game and three-point percentage. He is third in field-goal percentage and sixth in free-throw percentage. He averages 22.8 minutes a game, which ranks him fourth among NBA rookies.

Embiid averages 18.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game. He is the fifth player since at least 1983-84 to hold such averages through 12 career games, and the first since Shaquille O’Neal did so in 1992-93 with the Orlando Magic. The other three players include former Sixer Dikembe Mutombo (1991-92), David Robinson (1989-90) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1984-85), according to Basketball-Reference.com

Embiid is the fourth Sixers player to be named Rookie of the Month since the award’s started in 1981-82. He joins the list that includes Michael Carter-Williams (four times in 2013-14), Allen Iverson (twice in 1996-97) and Jerry Stackhouse (once in 1995-96).

Temple’s Dion Dawkins

named to Senior Bowl

Temple’s offensive tackle Dion Dawkins has been selected to play in the Senior Bowl. Dawkins was one of 15 players that were recently added to this year’s game.

He earned fourth team All-America honors from Phil Steele after the 2015 season. Dawkins has done a great job of blocking for Owls standout running backs Jahad Thomas and Ryquell Armstead who have rushed for a combined 1,511 yards and 21 touchdowns this season.

The Senior Bowl will be played on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2:30 p.m. from Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Al.

Former Imhotep Charter running back Mike Waters receives honor

Former Imhotep Charter running back Mike Waters who plays for Delaware State was named to the All Mid-Eastern Athletic third team. Waters led the team in rushing. He averaged 74.5 yards a game this season.

Waters finished third in the MEAC in rushing. He rushed for a Delaware State freshman record 820 yards while scoring five touchdowns. Waters rushed for a career-high 224 yards against Howard, which is also a Delaware State freshman record.
