RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A preliminary report says a Raleigh man injured in a recent non-fatal police shooting was holding a fake gun with its orange safety tip removed.

The News & Observer reports that Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown has released the initial report into a shooting incident where an officer ordered a man to “drop his weapon” when he saw him brandishing what appeared to be a real gun at an apartment complex.

The newspaper says that when Michael Hendricks continued to point his weapon the officer fired once, striking him in the abdomen. It turned out the man was holding an Airsoft replica weapon.

Dispatchers had received a 911 call about a knife-wielding man who appeared to “having a flashback.”

The officer has been placed on administrative duty amid an investigation.
