HUNTINGTON — Dozens of women dressed in red came together Sunday evening to attend the Women’s Ministry of Full Gospel Assembly’s healthy heart event in the Cora Duckworth Fellowship Hall on 10th Avenue in Huntington.

“I want women to combine the physical, the spiritual and the mental aspects of having a healthy heart and how all three are so important to good heart health,” said Melissa Z. Tubbs, Chief Pharmacist with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Tubbs was the featured speaker at the event and said women tend to put others ahead of themselves.

″ Women today a re so busy taking care of so many things,” she said. “I think God has sent me to tell these beautiful women to take some time for themselves to relax, enjoy themselves and let some of that stress go.”

Tubbs said exercise, diet, rest and meditation are some of the most valuable components to heart health.

“They play hand in hand to make sure that heart is healthy,” she said.

Renna Moore, the Women’s Ministry past president, said the “Matters of the Heart” is an annual event that has been going on for over two decades.

“We have done a number of programs over the years to educate the women in our ministry, as well as the church and the members of our community, of the importance of heart health,” Moore said.

Moore says the women attending were asked to wear red in celebration of the “Go Red For Women” movement.

“We want women to understand that making a commitment to your health isn’t something you have to do alone,” she said.

There was also a Zumba session led by certified instructors, Tosha Hairston and Erica Harmon.

“We are doing the salsa technique that helps get your heart rate up,” Harmon said. “Zumba is for all ages, whether they be old or young, male or female.”

Harmon added that free Zumba classes are offered to the community at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the A.D. Lewis Community Center in Huntington’s Fairfield West’s community.

Sunday’s event also featured a sampling of heart healthy treats. In addition, vendors including Avon, Paparazzi Jewelry, Posh Cosmetics and others were at the event to promote heart health.
