DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — An officer killed in a 2018 ambush now has a park named in his honor in his South Carolina hometown.

The Sergeant Terrence Carraway Memorial Park opened Thursday in Darlington.

Carraway’s family remembered him as children played nearby on a swing set.

“It’s great to know that his legacy will go on and that kids in the future will know how important he was to this community and his impact on our neighborhoods and our cities,” Carraway’s brother Daniel Blathers told WPDE-TV.

The park also has a lighted basketball court, something Carraway would have enjoyed because he loved coaching and mentoring kids, his wife said.

“It is near and dear to me because it is so close to his heart,” Allison Carraway said. “It does my heart joy to know that he in some way impacts the lives of the kids back then, and now and hopefully in the future.”

Darlington is also working on a downtown memorial park to fallen officers that should open this fall.
