Irish-Trained Zagreb Wins Irish Derby

June 30, 1996

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) _ Zagreb, ridden by Pat Shanahan and trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld, won the Irish Derby on Sunday.

Owned by Allen Paulson, the man who owns Cigar, Zagreb was a 20-1 outsider in the field of 13 3-year-olds who went about 1 1/2 miles.

He raced clear from the field after passing the pace-setting Private Song about a quarter-mile from the finish line.

Polaris Flight, the French Derby runner-up, was second with His Excellence, a 50-1 shot, third. Dushyantor, the 5-4 betting favorite, was fourth.

``We have always thought a lot of him,″ Shanahan said of Zagreb. ``I expected Zagreb to run well and I thought he would finish in the first four or five.″
